About Mt Field National Park

Mt Field National Park, established in 1916, is one of Tasmania’s oldest national parks and is located approximately 70 kilometers northwest of Hobart. The park covers a varied landscape that rises from cool temperate rainforests at lower altitudes to subalpine and alpine environments on the higher ridges. This vertical diversity sustains a wide range of native flora including ancient myrtle beech forests, giant tree ferns, and endemic alpine cushion plants. The forested areas provide shelter for unique wildlife such as Tasmanian devils, platypus, echidnas, and various bird species like the green rosella and the pink robin. Key attractions within the park include the iconic Russell Falls—a tiered waterfall easily accessible from the entrance—and Tarn Shelf, which offers panoramic views of mountain tarns and snow gums. Hiking is a major draw, with trails ranging from short, family-friendly walks to more challenging multi-hour hikes like the climb to Mount Field West, the highest peak in the park. In winter, the park’s higher elevations can receive snow, attracting visitors interested in snow play or scenic winter walks. The park’s proximity to Hobart makes it a favored day-trip destination for local residents and tourists alike, and its well-maintained infrastructure includes picnic areas, interpretive signage, and a visitor center. Mt Field’s combination of rich biodiversity, striking landscapes, and accessible trails ensures it remains a significant natural attraction in Tasmania.
